When he first began to speak, I had to just sit back and enjoy his accent before I could give his presentation my full attention. After that I really enjoyed his witty commentary, words of praise for the young adolescent subjects that took part in his study, and information that he shared. Several things really hit home with me... but first ... Catch Me Up.... ( I love this! I plan to use it and share it with my colleagues. ) I also was touched by the writings of Jose, Sasha, and the others who wrote about their experiences and feelings in their Extraordinary Reading Program . It sounds amazing and gave me a lot to think about as I try to continue to provide my students with a rich reading environment. I also liked ,,, Maybe, I wonder... and the use of Perhaps. The one quote that will stick with me the most is "Certain knowledge is dead knowledge. It doesn't change. Uncertainty is the key to student engagement." I never really thought of it that way! Now that I have passed the I Q Test , I can say good night to all , with a clear mind!

I was impressed with the success that Dr. Johnston presented concerning readers who becamed engaged in reading young adult fiction. Also, the fact that these students were communicating with others about what they read was encouraging. However, I have some reservations about the literary genre that some of the students may have chosen to read. What guidelines are in place to protect the young mind from material that is too mature to emotionally handle? This was a major concern for me.
