Quality classroom instruction
Jun 20 2011, 3:11 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 20 2011, 3:11 PM EDT
I was pleased to hear that all students need to receive standard core instruction. As a Title I instructor my students are supposed to be double dipped in guided reading. If this supplement instead of supplant concept is being implemented throughout districts, why arent we seeing more gains with Title I students? Do you find this valuable?

Our Title 1 students in our district had shown good success; however, we had an administrator that allowed us to develop a programs that was based on research results. We met with our students every day for 40 - 45 minutes. We were able to release a number of students mid-year or others made goals by the end of the year. Students who didn't make goals were students who were later identified with learning disabilities or students who didn't have appropriate support (at home or from classroom teachers). Unfortunately, I continue to hear stories of students in large groups, meeting 1 - 3 times a week for 15 - 30 minutes. Consistency and quality instruction is needed to achieve with that model of success. Do you find this valuable?

I meet with students 40 minutes 3x per cycle. Students that exited in the primary grades are often back in when they get to the intermediate building. Students that exited mid year in fifth grade often come back the beginning of sixth. Based on what marjorie said regarding the stagnation of title and ls kids this morning, I don't think it is just my district. Do you find this valuable?

I agree, your similar to many other districts. I can only speak to what we've done. In most cases students who were released from Title one did not return to Title 1 (at any level). We've also had a number of our Title students score very well on the PSSA's well into proficient and some into advanced). I've left the Title 1 world and sadly, the new administration appears to be adjusting what we've done in the past even though we had been able to demonstrate good results. We'll see what happens as a result of the "new" plan. Do you find this valuable?

It's good to know that you have had success with your students. My district colleagues discussed just today that we have students scoring proficient or advanced yet still not reading on grade level and not exiting Title.
