While I completely understand the benefits to each of the different forms of assessments discussed during the presentation, do you ever feel that we test the students so much that they lose focus or drive to do their best? (this then could undermine the purpose for the assessment which was mentioned as a problem)

I found it interesting to have a representative that works for the state express the PA perspective on RTII. I also enjoyed learning a little more about SAS and the website. I have visited the website several times this school year but I was unaware of the connection to RTII -- did not realize that RTII is the framework for SAS. I will look forward to looking deeper at SAS while having the RTII framework in mind. Fascinating stuff...

Lots of helpful info and a better understanding of SAS and its connection to RTII. I wanted to cheer at your comment that intervention curric should match and relate to what is happening in the regular classroom. Struggling kiddos need stronger connections...not totally different curriculum presented to them throughout their day.

Angela Kirby Wehr stated in her presentation that it is important to not pull students out of core instruction for various interventions, but to add additional supports in addition to the core instruction to close the gaps for students. I agree that this is very important, but find that as my school does more with RTII and progress monitoring it seems that students are missing classroom instruction that is vital to build upon for future instruction. What are the rest of the students doing in the classroom as other students are being pulled for various interventions throughout the day?

As mentioned in this presentation, I think it's very important to match interventions with what is being taught in the classroom. Communication between classroom teachers and interventionists is the key and challenge to making this happen.

I agree that students should not be missing core classroom content and instruction, but I find while that is preferred the scheduling of interventions, pull out time and learning support is so difficult that my struggling students are pulled out during key instruction. I struggle with being able to find a way around this when working with our reading specialists, IST teachers and special ed. teachers and meeting their schedule needs along with my classroom schedule needs. After this presentationI have a better understanding of where RTII fits in with the Standards Aligned Systems. SAS seems to be the “what” and RTII seems to be the “how” when instructing students of all levels and abilities.

Angela clearly explained the connection between RtII and SAS. I have a much richer understanding of both. I question how RtII differs from IST programs that were common a decade ago. It seems that some of the goals are quite similar.

The thing that has stuck with me the most is to not lose sight of how important the core instruction is for all of my students, despite their varying ability levels. I also was impacted by what she said about how crucial it is for all educators to have a common language, no matter what their role is in a school. That is very powerful!1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I now have a very good understanding of SAS. Our administration showed us SAS this school year and told us to use it to prep our students for the PSSAs. I now know it has much more to it. I agree with Angela's statements about the different types of assessment. Often times we have good testing tools, but we do not use them correctly. We need to teach the core standards, not to the benchmark and summative assessments that we give our students.

Angela Kirby-Wehr made an excellent point when she stated that it's not about the intervention, it's about the instruction. So often teachers think interventions will "fix" students' reading difficulties, but we fail to look at our classroom instruction. Giving students quality instruction from the get-go is critical if we want to prevent them from struggling with reading.

I have been to the PDE SAS website but really was overwhelmed with how to effectivlely use it . I now have a renewed interest in exploring the site. I am confident I will find some valuable resources I can use in my classroom.

Angela gave me reason to go back onto SAS. I have been on it before, but found it so large it was too time consuming. I didn't feel like the time spent gave me the results I wanted. I would like to go into SAS and take a look at the formative assessments. I connected her ideas to Marg Lipson's this morning. I want to improve my on-going formative assessments to help guide my instruction of individual students.

I agree that it is necessary for teachers to have solid core instruction before interventions can be used with students. Classroom teachers and special teachers need to work/plan together so interventions can be aligned with classroom instruction because students' brains seek sameness when they are learning.

It was a nice review of the four major types of assessment. I often feel like I live and breath assessments. In the past several years my students have been assessed and reassessed over and over again. I completely see the value of looking at the data to drive my instruction but it seems like I am teaching to the tests and my students are tested out by the time the standardized tests roll around. Testing is valuable but there are many more components to education.

Angela Kirby-Wehr discussed at length the connection between RTII and SAS. I have been hearing about SAS from administrators for while, but didn’t have a clear vision of the importance of SAS. Now that I understand the connection and the resources available, I believe I will actually utilize SAS in the future now that my district is piloting RTII.

I really liked how Angela kept referring to the way we use assessments. If we do not use them the correct way, they are useless. I enjoyed learning more about the SAS site. I have used it in the past, and enjoy seeing the correlation with RTII.

Dr. Kirby-Wehr's overview on SAS and the history on RTII in PA was a helpful review for me. Although I have visited SAS on a few ocassions, I now know I need to delve into the website further. I especially want to look at the assessments and the lessonplans. In addition, since my school's ELL population is growing, I have to look into the ESL information to support my ELL students. I did not realize this was included on the SAS.

Shared Ownership states that the when using RtII framework all staff is used to scaffold and differentiate core instruction. I found the quote "Paraprofessionals provide key support to students with reinforced learning, instuctional practice, fluency tasks, and progress monitoring" very interesting as we currently reduced the number of hours our students are supported by paraprofessionals in our district.
