Internet Innovations to
Inspire Global Education Partnerships

I am a secondary science teacher of 23 years and an adjunct instructor for Lebanon Valley College’s Masters of Science Education program. In addition I do a variety of workshops and educational consulting. With the help and support of many, we have been able to establish a global educational partnership in Haiti and we are seeking to make it sustainable despite natural disasters and political challenges that historically plague that country. I am married and have three children.
If this session interests you and you like to seek three credits to explore this in more detail, please check out LVC's MSE Summer Schedule. LVC's MSE Summer Schedule LVC's MSE program | Email: remingto@lvc.edu |

Description: Come journey with us. In 2008, a few students at the Palmyra Middle School took on a challenge to create an Internet collaborative wiki pilot with students at a school in Haiti. In what has been a roller coaster ride with rewards and heartaches, we are approaching the potential to make a lasting positive impact on the lives of many in the United States, Haiti and around the world. We hope to create an educational model that others around the world may utilize and implement.
On this journey, we have stumbled upon many cool and useful Internet tools that any educator can implement to make their own teaching and student learning more dynamic and meaningful.
Even if you are not interested creating a global partnership, you will walk away inspired and also find many interesting and useful Internet gems that you can apply to your own instruction. This session will touch on the following institute objectives:
-Participate in cognitive conversations about the future of classroom instruction. -Identify emerging technological tools and powerful on-line resources that aid in motivating digital minds.

Workshop Info:We will start our global tour with our Internet passport, Delicious. If you do not have a Delicious account, take a minute to create one or we can create one together at this session.
Delicious (Your Internet passport!)More useful sites to come that you may "stamp" on your "Internet Passport" (Delicious).
Welcome to Web 2.0 and Curriculum 21! This is "Geek Speak" for where education is going on the web. Before we get to our first stop, you may want to book mark the next three sites on your Delicious account.
Stop #1. Get your Delicious passport ready!Our first stop is language translation programs. You may not be interested in doing a global wiki, but I will bet your ESL & ELL population continues to grow and diversify. These translation programs can help you communicate and adapt work for your ESL & ELL population. Since this is a key subgroup of PSSAs, utilizing these programs is time well spent.
Google TranslateBy far, this is the best free translator I have used to date. It is more intuitive than the others. It provides word choices for correct context. It can translate whole web pages and maintain their context.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Stop #2. Video & Podcast Connections
With all the online media, instant access to downloading, uploading and viewing video are unprecedented. Gone are the days of filmstrips and super 8 film, anyone can express themselves globally. There are many useful web applications to help you make your classroom learning environment dynamic!
FLIP Video Camera With this inexpensive piece of technology, making and uploading videos is quick and easy. You can video you lessons, tutorials, etc. and save your time as well as give students unlimited access to your teaching.
Viewpoint (embedding video tool)TeacherTube Although teacher tube is not as popular as YouTube, it is content filtered to protect your students. Most school’s Internet filtering software allow this site as opposed to YouTube.
SchoolTubeLike teacher tube
Watch KnowStudent learning videos
PodcastingAll inclusive site to create, view and manage podcasts.
Voice Thread Like a podcast
There are many video sharing platforms and sites on the web but the two above are much safer for school use.
KeepVidThis is a VERY USEFUL site. So lets say you find a great You Tube or Daily Motion video for class but your school's blocking software won't let you view it, you can use KeepVid to download it to a flash drive or your computer's hard drive.
Students are curious explorers. With satellite imagery, students have better access to see all parts of the world up close! There are some great applications for learning.
Google Earth (The gold standard)PanoramioNot as powerful as Google Earth but adds the element of uploaded photos of local sites.
Stop #4. Forgot your library card? Don't worry! The days of the paper books may be fading fast along with brick and mortar libraries that house them. With the Kindle and the I-Pad, there will be a big push to move to e-books. Jump on the bandwagon in your classroom and do it for FREE! With an increasing ESL & ELL population, you may be able to connect to those learners with a book in their native language that relates to your subject.
