Making Way for Meaning: Building Comprehension through Talking and Movement | |
I'm a fourth grade teacher and writer. My classroom is a talkative, social place, filled with the ideas of learners. I never know what will happen next--from exploring pond water to categorizing shark teeth to searching for an escaped caterpillar. No matter what the day, students are engaged in reading, writing, and communicating.

Description:While teachers can’t possibly give students all of the topic knowledge they will need for every text, teachers can build students’ background knowledge of different kinds of text, and help them to learn and refine strategies for working with narrative, informational, and poetic text. In this session, teachers will explore easy ways to get kids talking and moving while still building their schema for reading.
Workshop Info:Figurative language is tough for many students to understand. In this Powerpoint, students use the strategy of visualizing to unlock the mysteries of figurative language.
