I wanted to point out that I and my colleagues have created a system for evaluating basal readers and it was designed for districts going through an adoption process. The system is available free through IRA. Go to the publication page of IRA. They find the books section. Under books you will find a link to my book. From there you can access all of the forms for evaluating and conducting a search for a new basal.

One of my all time favorite authors is Patricia Polacco and the fact that she read Junkyard Wonders was a real treat. I don't have that book as of yet but plan on getting it A.S.A.P. I had never heard the terms Visualizing and Verbalizing the way that it was used today but I came away with her presentation with some fantastic ideas. I loved the piece where Barbara showed us how pictures can really stimulate discussion motivation, engagement and vocabulary development. I also liked having the 15 Structure Words that are used to encourage student engagement and verbalizations. I hope to make color coded sets for my classroom so that my students will have those visual clues and I'll add picture clues also since my learners are in 1st Grade.

I was pleased to hear that all students need to receive standard core instruction. As a Title I instructor my students are supposed to be double dipped in guided reading. If this supplement instead of supplant concept is being implemented throughout districts, why arent we seeing more gains with Title I students?

When he first began to speak, I had to just sit back and enjoy his accent before I could give his presentation my full attention. After that I really enjoyed his witty commentary, words of praise for the young adolescent subjects that took part in his study, and information that he shared. Several things really hit home with me... but first ... Catch Me Up.... ( I love this! I plan to use it and share it with my colleagues. ) I also was touched by the writings of Jose, Sasha, and the others who wrote about their experiences and feelings in their Extraordinary Reading Program . It sounds amazing and gave me a lot to think about as I try to continue to provide my students with a rich reading environment. I also liked ,,, Maybe, I wonder... and the use of Perhaps. The one quote that will stick with me the most is "Certain knowledge is dead knowledge. It doesn't change. Uncertainty is the key to student engagement." I never really thought of it that way! Now that I have passed the I Q Test , I can say good night to all , with a clear mind!

I thoroughly enjoyed Linda's presentation and learned so much. I feel that there was so much presented that I'll really have to go home tonight and think about everything that she had to offer. I am hooked on the idea of having a whole school learning community where opportunities are available where we all come together for our common cause- the success of our students. My school is home to many poverty stricken students who find solace, comfort, nurturing, and compassion as well as trying to overcome academic failure. We all know that they need so much more than we can offer but it seems as if other schools in the same situation were able to come together and provide a unified educational front. I am always looking for ways to better improve my teaching methods especially since I move from one grade to another often and feel that Linda has provided me with ways in which I can do that by working more collaboratively with my peers. I'm a big component of team work so I truly hope that this can become more than that in my school. I want that ...... community! I want to be that teacher that helps them succeed. Teaching is a two way street and I have found that my greatest instructors have been my students. My low achievers are my challengers, my motivators, my learning ladders. I look forward to reading more of Linda's work!

It was a nice overview of RTII came about. I seem to get bits and pieces about RTII and she explained the importance of using the same assessments to initiate instruction and to check progress. It was very informative and she was an excellent apeaker.

Well I'm going to try this again and hope that this time it shows up! I for one am very happy that Marjorie was our first Keynote Speaker this morning because she helped me to understand the ins and out of the RTI process. My district began incorporating RTI several years ago when it was just beginning to come into play. We were given some instruction and training, but not enough to truly understand or feel comfortable about implementing it. Needless to say, we dove in and began trying to apply the components with students that we felt were at risk . After listening to Marjorie this morning, I now can make sense of some of the things that concerned me in the past. I feel that she presented the material in an easy to understand manner and was able to understand it even better after reading the first chapter in her book. I had an opportunity to speak with her at lunch and found her to be kind and generous with her time. I hope that everyone was able to take something from her presentation. I know I did! If in the future, I am involved with RTI , I'll be a little more knowledgeable and a lot more comfortable.

There was a lot of information shared during this presentation particularly pertaining to SAS. I need to take some time to explore the SAS website. It seemed to contain a lot of useful information pertaining to standards and instruction.

This presentation affirmed some things I already knew about RTII but I now have a better understanding of how PA's framework is set up and how it compares to a few others. I loved hearing that Tier 1 is standards aligned instruction for ALL students and this is where classroom instruction plays a key role; that good teaching matters and early intervention is very effective.

As an elementary teacher it's easy to forget that reading instruction needs to continue throughout k - 12. If we don't build a solid foundation of strategies early, especially for struggling readers, the deficiency gap will only grow wider. It was good to get confirmation from Mr. Brozo that reading comics, lyrics, etc can be beneficial - not everyone is interested in reading chapter books but it's essential that all students keep reading.

I found her suggestion about the state educational website helpful. Though I have been on the PDE website before after a presentation such as todays, it inspires me to spend more time browsing the information available. So often we hear things second hand, it's good to hear 'official' information about how and why we are doing RTII.

I'm on a roll now...... I was particularly interested in what this gentleman had to say after hearing about his many experiences here and abroad. I was fascinated with his travels and background as well as his subject matter. I have been both a primary educator and a secondary special education educator so I could definitely relate to the needs of our middle school and high school learners. Dr. Brozo offered some excellent background on the educational needs of these learners and also provided strategies and techniques to use. I was constantly thinking about ways that I could apply what he was presenting to my younger learners and those older students that I tutor throughout the year. Most of my tutoring is done with adolescent males who constantly proove to be a challenge. I was comforted to know that my use of Graphic Novels , Sports Illustrated and other resources was right on target. Even though they haven't always been overly receptive to working on reading during the summer, they have shown growth and improvement throughout the summer and did not succumb from the Summer Slide. I feel that he reaffirmed what I do and made me feel comfortable with my methods. It was a really good presentation and I look forward to getting his notes!

Hello all. I'm hoping that this will take on my first try so here goes...... I was pleasantly surprised with how much information Angela was able to provide in such a short amount of time. It's evident that she knows her subject matter and is passionate about her work. I enjoy finding out about how things work and come to be even when the topic isn't a very stimulating one. I think that she did her best explaining the reasons for RTI and who it is designed to serve. I found her explanation of SAS very beneficial because I had heard of it at several Inservice Programs but knew very little about it. We have been encouraged by our administrators in the past and I look forward (still with some apprehension) to using it. To make sure that we're all on the same page... I have a copy for my principal in case there are future issues or concerns. I hope that my bases will now be covered...............

I often use picture books as mentor texts with my fifth and sixth graders. I was intrigued by the idea of having students bring in familiar text to bridge competency to academic texts. the rap was great!
